JP Morgan Mandates Fingerprint or Eye Scans for Headquarters Access
The banking leader has informed personnel assigned to its recently built headquarters in NYC that they are required to provide their biological identifiers to access the multi-billion building.
Move from Discretionary to Compulsory
The investment bank had initially intended for the collection of employee biometrics at its new skyscraper to be discretionary.
However, staff of the biggest American bank who have started operations at the main office since this summer have received electronic messages stating that biometric access was now "mandatory".
The Technology Behind Entry
This security method demands employees to provide their eye patterns to pass through access portals in the entrance area in place of scanning their ID badges.
Building Specifications and Capacity
The main office building, which allegedly cost $3 billion to construct, will in time serve as a home for thousands of employees once it is completely filled before year-end.
Protection Reasoning
JP Morgan opted not to respond but it is assumed that the implementation of biological markers for access is designed to make the premises safer.
Alternative Access Methods
There are exceptions for certain staff members who will continue to have the option to use a badge for entry, although the requirements for who will employ more traditional ID access remains unclear.
Additional Technological Features
Complementing the deployment of palm and eye scanners, the company has also introduced the "Work at JPMC" mobile app, which acts as a digital badge and hub for staff resources.
The platform enables users to coordinate guest registration, explore indoor maps of the building and schedule dining from the building's nineteen food service providers.
Broader Safety Concerns
The implementation of tighter entry controls comes as American companies, particularly those with substantial activities in NYC, look to enhance safety following the shooting of the top executive of one of the US's largest health insurers in recent months.
The CEO, the leader of the healthcare company, was the victim of the attack not far from the bank's location.
Future Expansion Possibilities
It is not known if JP Morgan intends to implement biometric access for employees at its locations in other key banking hubs, such as London.
Broader Workplace Monitoring Trends
The move comes within debate over the implementation of digital tools to track workers by their companies, including monitoring workplace presence.
In recent months, all JP Morgan workers on hybrid work schedules were told they have to report to the workplace on a daily basis.
Leadership Viewpoint
The bank's chief executive, the financial executive, has characterized the bank's new 60-storey headquarters as a "impressive representation" of the institution.
The banker, one of the world's most powerful bankers, recently warned that the chance of the American markets facing a downturn was significantly higher than many financiers anticipated.
