Previous FBI Chief James Comey Submits Not Guilty Plea to Allegations of Falsehoods US Legislators
Former Federal Bureau of Investigation chief James Comey has entered an innocent plea to providing misleading information to lawmakers and hindering a legislative process.
His legal representative submitted the response representing him in a US district court in the Virginia city of Alexandria on mid-week.
His attorney declared he would attempt to have the proceedings dismissed for various factors including that his client, a opponent of Donald Trump, was being selectively prosecuted.
The former director was formally accused shortly after the former president pressured his attorney general to move forward against him.
Judicial Process
At the proceedings on Wednesday, Comey's lawyer the legal representative advised the magistrate they planned to file various legal requests to throw out the proceedings before a trial, claiming the government's case was spiteful and that a government lawyer was improperly designated to handle the legal matter.
James Comey's proceedings was originally overseen by the original attorney, who stepped down under pressure from Donald Trump after his probe into an additional opponent - New York Attorney General Letitia James - did not succeed to bring criminal charges.
Judicial Environment
The former director seemed in positive mood as he came into the courtroom on mid-week, conversing with his attorneys and making jokes. He was supported by his partner, Mrs Failor and offspring his daughter, a federal prosecutor who the previous administration terminated.
Following the reading to the judge state his legal protections and the two counts against him in court on mid-week, Mr Comey was questioned if he grasped the charges.
"Absolutely your honour. Thank you," he told the judge.
Background Context
Mr Comey was the FBI Director from 2013-2017 and was terminated about several months into Donald Trump's first term as national leader. At the time, the director was overseeing an examination into Russian election interference and whether there were any links between the Russian government and the presidential campaign.
During his tenure, James Comey caused a counter-response from Democrats when he announced just immediately preceding the 2016 election that he was examining political contender Hillary Clinton's use of a non-governmental email account. Legal actions against Clinton were not filed, causing criticism from conservative politicians as well.
Current Allegations
The federal government claim the former director provided false information to Congress during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing in 2020 when he was being examined about both the Clinton investigation as well as the election interference investigation. They allege he deceived the legislative body by claiming he had not permitted someone at the Federal Bureau of Investigation to disclose to journalistic entities details about the government examinations.
Prosecutors also accuse James Comey of "wrongfully trying to influence, obstruct and impede" the legislative group by providing untrue information to it.
Public Statements
Via social media the former director published to his social media after he was charged, he declared he was wrongly accused and accused the former president of acting like a "autocrat".
"My family and I have been aware for years that there are ramifications to standing up to the former president," he said. "We will not live on our knees."
"I'm innocent," he added. "Thus initiate a trial."
The accusations against the former director emerged after Trump posted on social media insisting on his attorney general, Ms Bondi, prosecute Mr Comey and other people.
