Rare Red Electrical Discharge Captured in the Heavens
A team of photographers based in the island nation have recorded images of red lightning, one of the most elusive atmospheric displays globally, where glowing scarlet illuminations appear in the sky.
A Memorable Night of Discovery
This group of artists began their evening to shoot the night sky over the unique geological structures in the South Island of the country on a specific autumn evening, before encountering the unusual spectacle.
Assuming they would be fortunate to get good weather that night, but their shooting session became “an unforgettable one,” an individual involved commented.
“He was checking his images for a Milky Way panorama and found he had captured red sprites,” the individual explained. “The discovery was astounding – it resulted in excited exclamations and all sorts going on in the dark.”
Understanding Red Sprites
These crimson flashes are electrical discharges in the higher atmospheric layers, generated by electrical storms. Differing from lightning that strikes downward to the surface, red sprites shoot upwards towards the mesospheric region, creating structures that are similar to vertical forms, carrots or even bell-shaped organisms. The earliest recorded picture of a this phenomenon was taken – by chance – in that year, by a team at the a academic organization.
Brief and Ethereal Sightings
The phenomena last for such a short time – persisting for a mere instant – that they are rarely visible to the unaided vision, but an individual had a lucky break. “I happened to be looking straight toward one when it happened – pure chance looking at the correct area of the heavens and I witnessed a brief red flash,” he said.
Observing the occurrences was a goal for the artist, an award-winning nocturnal imaging specialist. “It appears as if you witness an impossible sight, it appears mystical … the color is a profound crimson that is there for a split second, so it’s really interesting to see.”
Technical and Creative Mastery
Capturing a such an event requires a proficiency with advanced imaging techniques, as well as an understanding of atmospheric physics and creative flare, he said. “This is a highly complex type of photography that’s extremely satisfying as well.”
A different team member remarked it was one of the “most extraordinary nights” of his life. “I was able to observe the galactic band glowing above the distant edge while these enormous red tendrils of energy danced above a thunderstorm far on the horizon,” he described.
A Unique Photographic Achievement
To his knowledge, there are no additional photographs capturing crimson flashes and the southern hemisphere Milky Way in the same photograph.
“It was one of those moments when you understand you’re witnessing an event you’ll probably never see again.”
